Installing New Virus Definitions Files ====================================== This document details the virus definitions update procedures for: * Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 * Norton AntiVirus 3.0 * Norton AntiVirus Network Manager * Norton AntiVirus for NetWare 2.0 * Norton AntiVirus Scanner for Windows NT * Installing Virus Definitions Files Manually _____________________________________________________________________ TIP: Be sure to read the WHATSNEW.TXT for important information about new viruses. The new macro virus that infects Microsoft Excel files requires you to add .xl? to the Program File Extensions List. For instructions, see WHATSNEW.TXT. _____________________________________________________________________ Intelligent Updater =================== As part of our continuing commitment to fight the spread of computer viruses, Symantec has developed a new program called Intelligent Updater to simplify virus definitions files updates. Intelligent Updater locates Norton AntiVirus on your computer and installs new virus definitions files automatically. All you have to do is run the program then scan your disk with Norton AntiVirus. Later sections of this document give step-by-step instructions for each Norton AntiVirus version. The Intelligent Updater program file is located on your Virus Definitions Update disk. The program name, which changes from month to month, uses the following form: mmNAVyy.EXE, where mm is the month and yy is the year. For example, 10NAV96.EXE is the virus definitions files update for October, 1996. Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 =============================== ____________________________________________________________________ Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 (NAVW32.EXE) is dated earlier than December 1, 1995, you need to upgrade your software before updating the virus definitions files. Using older versions of Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 will cause false detections when the new virus definitions are installed. The Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 upgrade program updates Norton AntiVirus to detect and eliminate a new class of viruses called macro viruses. These viruses infect Microsoft Word document and template files, and Microsoft Excel files. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus program, download the file named NAV95PCH.EXE. Place the file in an empty folder and execute NAV95PCH.EXE to extract its contents. Step-by-step instructions are included in the READNOW.TXT file. NAV95PCH.EXE is located where the monthly virus definitions files updates are normally found. It is available for download from the Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, America Online, or Microsoft Network. You can also call Customer Service at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set. To update Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 virus definitions files: 1. Change to the folder where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program (10NAV96.EXE). 2. Double-click on the file 10NAV96.EXE. Follow the instructions on screen. 3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. This activates the new virus definitions. 4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new definitions as well. Norton AntiVirus 3.0 ==================== _____________________________________________________________________ Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus 3.0 (NAV.EXE or NAVW.EXE) is dated earlier than February 23, 1996, you need to upgrade your software before updating the virus definitions files. Using older versions of Norton AntiVirus will cause false detections when the new virus definitions are installed. The Norton AntiVirus 3.0 upgrade program updates Norton AntiVirus to detect and eliminate a new class of viruses called macro viruses. These viruses infect Microsoft Word document and template files, and Microsoft Excel files. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus program, download the file named UPDATEME.EXE. Place the file in an empty directory and execute UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents. Step-by-step instructions are included in the READ.ME file (you can open this file using any text editor). UPDATEME.EXE is located where the monthly virus definitions files updates are normally found. It is available for download from the Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, America Online, or Microsoft Network. You can also call Customer Service at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set. _____________________________________________________________________ To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files, use one of the following procedures. Either procedure will update both the Norton AntiVirus 3.0 DOS and Windows components. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from Windows: 1. Change to the directory where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program (10NAV96.EXE). 2. Double-click on the file 10NAV96.EXE. Follow the instructions on screen. 3. After the update is complete, start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. This activates the new virus definitions. 4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new definitions as well. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from DOS: 1. Change to the directory where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program (10NAV96.EXE). 2. From the DOS prompt, type 10NAV96.EXE and press Enter. Follow the instructions on screen. 3. After the update is complete, start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. This activates the new virus definitions. 4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new definitions as well. Norton AntiVirus for NetWare version 2.0 ========================================= _____________________________________________________________________ Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare, version 2.0 is dated earlier than December 13, 1995, you must upgrade your software before updating the virus definitions files. The new version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare detects and eliminates a new class of viruses called macro viruses. These viruses infect Microsoft Word document and template files, and Microsoft Excel files. For information on how to receive the upgrade, call Customer Service at (800) 441-7234. _____________________________________________________________________ To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare virus definitions files: 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program (10NAV96.EXE). 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus for NetWare is installed. You must have WRITE access to the mapped drive. 3. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. Choose DISABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare Windows configuration window or press F3 at the NAVNLM server console screen. 4. From a DOS prompt, type 10NAV96.EXE [path] and press Enter. [path] is the location mapped in step 2. Follow the instructions on screen. 5. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. Choose ENABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare Windows configuration window or press F2 at the NAVNLM server console screen. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager ================================ _____________________________________________________________________ Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus Network Manager (NAVNET.EXE) is dated before February, 1996, you must upgrade your software before updating the virus definitions files. Using an older version of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager with the new virus definitions may generate false alarms. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus Network Manager program, download the file named UPDATEME.EXE. Place the file in an empty directory and execute UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents. Step-by-step instructions are included in the READ.ME file. After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, you must do the following: 1. Delete all VIRSP*.DAT files from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager directory. 2. Recreate your .NNS files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a template. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program (10NAV96.EXE). 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus Network Manager is installed. You must have READ and WRITE access to the mapped drive. 3. From a DOS prompt, type 10NAV96.EXE [path] and press Enter. [path] is the location mapped in step 2. Follow the instructions on screen. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager directory and scan a drive to activate the new virus definitions. Norton AntiVirus Scanner for Windows NT ======================================= To update Norton AntiVirus Scanner for NT virus definitions files: 1. Change to the folder where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program (10NAV96.EXE). 2. At a command prompt, type 10NAV96.EXE and press Enter. Follow the instructions on screen. 3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. This activates the new virus definitions. Installing Virus Definitions Files Manually =========================================== _____________________________________________________________________ If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to extract the virus definitions files, then copy the appropriate files to the Norton AntiVirus folder. To install virus definitions files manually: 1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (10NAV96.EXE) to an empty temporary folder. 2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command: 10NAV96.EXE /DUMP Virus definitions files for all supported platforms are extracted into the temporary folder. 3. Copy the appropriate files to the Norton AntiVirus folder. Refer to the Intelligent Updater File List below for information on which files to copy into the Norton AntiVirus folder.
